The next Cinema and Dining will be on Tuesday 28th April.

The movie at the Roseville Cinema on Tuesday 28 April 2026 is Jean Valjean in Cinema 2, from 7.15pm to 9.00pm.   It’s a French film with English Subtitles.

Dinner will be at 5.30pm in the nearby Shonan Japanese Restaurant.

Directed by Eric Besnard

Starring Isabelle Carré, Bernard Campan, Grégory Gadebois, Alexandra Lamy

The film is a poignant new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece “Les Miserables”, charting the origin story of Jean Valjean, the beloved tale’s iconic protagonist.

A gripping exploration of justice, grace and moral redemption, Besnard’s reflective and intimate drama - and Gadebois’ towering central performance - bring great depth to Hugo’s hero, a spurned man transformed by kindness and compassion

TOUR OF GPO BUILDING MARTIN PLACE

(Fullerton Hotel)

Tuesday 12th  May 2026

The Fullerton Hotel Sydney is a five-star luxury hotel in the city’s financial and fashion district, set in the historic former General Post Office building.
The Sydney GPO was constructed in two stages, beginning in 1866 and designed under the guidance of colonial architect James Barnet.  It was regarded as a building that would come to symbolise Sydney in the same way the Houses of Parliament in Westminster represent London and the Eiffel Tower, Paris.

Our 90-minute tour starts in the hotel lobby at 12:00. See April WRAP for full details.

WALK and EXPLORE

2605 Walks Woolwich.jpg

Contact: James Loxton 0412 559 395

Our next walk will be held on Thursday 7th May.

Greg Starr has plotted a walk around Woolwich.  The walk will start at Valentia St wharf at the end of Hunters Hill.  We will then walk up The Point Rd towards the pub.  We can then explore Goat Paddock before walking down to the drydock, the home of the maxi yachts.  From there we walk around Clark’s Pt Reserve towards and through Kelly’s Bush and then to the pub for lunch.
Greg measured the walk at about 4kms and rated the walk as Grade 2 due to some climbing from the Harbour to the top of The Point Rd.
The walk will commence at 10.10am from Valentia St wharf. You can either drive there and park in the surrounding streets or catch the ferry from Circular Quay at 9.45.  If you want to meet for coffee before catching the ferry, I suggest we meet in the usual place in front of Customs House at 9.15.

Please let James know if you intend to join the walk.

2605 Books Mundy.jpg
2605 Books Richardson.jpg
2605 Books Tuchman.jpg
2605 Books Shute.jpg
  • The Nature of Ice– Robyn Mundy - Fiction – Thanks to Bill Killinger
Weaving in a vivid recreation of Douglas Mawson's ill-fated 1911-1914 Antarctic expedition into the contemporary story of a woman coming to terms with the end of her marriage, The Nature of Ice is a poetic, multi-stranded novel of present and past, hope and tragedy, love and loss.

  • Scarlet Papers – Matthew Richardson– Fiction - Thanks to Greg Starr

  • A spy thriller, it’s sprinkled with well-known espionage figures and events ranging from Kim Philby and Vasili Mitrokhin, a KGB archivist who came in from the cold, to Sergei Skripal and the Salisbury poisonings. It weaves descriptions of tradecraft – secret meetings, letterbox drops and bugging – amid the intricate and deadly workings of the secret services.

.

  • The Guns of August– Barbara Tuchman – Nonfiction - Thanks to Geoff Brew

  • The book is centered on the first month of WW1. It provides a narrative of the earliest stages of the War, from the decisions to go to war up until the start of the Franco-British offensive that stopped the German advance into France. Barbara Tuchman's universally acclaimed, Pulitzer prize-winning account of how the first thirty days of battle determined the course of the First World War is to this day revered as the classic account of the conflict's opening.

  • No Highway– Neville Shute – Classic - Thanks to Ian Falconer
A scientist has been claiming that certain parts of a new aircraft called a Reindeer will develop metal fatigue sooner than officially estimated, but nobody takes him seriously. While flying to the site of an air crash that killed a Soviet ambassador, he discovers that his own plane is a Reindeer which has already flown twice its permitted number of hours. He uses his technical knowledge to sabotage it as soon as it lands, putting his credibility further in doubt.

We meet, talk, drink beer/wine/coffee - have fun!  Then a quick lunch.

Ian Falconer runs Nick’s Book Exchange at the monthly General Meeting.  Bring your old books please
